Background: The Consulate General of India in Hambantota was inaugurated by Hon’ble Minister of External Affairs, Shri S.M. Krishna, on 28 November, 2010. Prof. G.L. Peiris, Minister of External Affairs, Sri Lanka, Mrs. Kumari Balasuriya, Governor of Southern Province, Sri Lanka, Smt. Nirupama Rao, Foreign Secretary of India and Shri Ashok K. Kantha, High Commissioner of India, were present on the occasion.

Consular Jurisdiction: The consular jurisdiction of the Consulate covers the districts of Hambantota, Matara, Galle (Southern Province) and Moneragala (Uva Province). The Consulate will provide visas and other consular services to people from all these districts. In addition, the consulate will also facilitate educational, cultural and trade interaction of people from these districts with people in India.

Visa Services: The Consulate has been providing visa services since 10 January, 2011. Visa applicants have to fill up the application on-line at http:///www.indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa, then take a print out of the on-line application and then lodge it at the Consulate with two photographs and necessary fees. Additional documents may be required depending on the type of visa required. Visa applications are accepted at the Consulate on every working day between 0930 hrs to 1200 hrs and distribution of passports submitted with visa is from 1600 hrs to 1700 hrs, on all working days.

The Consul General is Mr. Dipin P.R. He assumed charge as the Consul General of India, Hambantota, on 28th August, 2020.
