India helps renovate Saraswathy Central College, Pusselawa, Kandy
Foundation stone for new buildings laid
At a special ceremony held on 10 August 2018, foundation stone was laid to start the construction of new buildings at Saraswathy Central College in Pusselawa, Kandy district. The foundation stone was laid by H. E. Mr. Taranjit Singh Sandhu, High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka jointly with Hon State Minister for Education Mr. V. Radhakrishnan and Hon Minister for Agriculture and Tamil Education of Central Province Mr. M. Rameshwaran.
Several Hon. Members of Parliament, Hon. Members of Central Provincial Council, senior Officials from Government of Sri Lanka, the principal and teachers, present and past students of the College and a large number of public participated in the event.
The renovation of the college is being done using a grant of SLR 96 million from the Government of India. The new buildings will accommodate Science Labs, Lecture Halls and teachers’ quarters. The project also involves repair and renovation of existing buildings including parapet and retaining walls; provision of office & ICT equipment, furniture etc. as well as full renovation of the school playground.
This project is in continuation of Government of India’s efforts to partner with Government of Sri Lanka in peoples oriented development projects especially in the field of Education including construction and upgradation of schools, provision of IT and Scientific Laboratory equipment to schools, organizing English language and other training programs, apart from granting scholarships to Sri Lankan students to pursue their studies in Sri Lanka and in India. India’s overall commitment of development assistance to Sri Lanka stands at a total of around US$ 3 billion, out of which US$ 550 million is pure grant assistance.
