High Commissioner of India, H.E. Shri Alok Prasad, hands over consignment of 40,000 family packs of humanitarian relief material for IDPs affected by the conflict in northern Sri Lanka to the ICRC on 30.4.09

PR - 15

The High Commissioner of India, Mr. Alok Prasad, today handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross Delegation a consignment of 40,000 individually-packed family packs of humanitarian relief material intended for the internally displaced persons affected by the conflict in northern Sri Lanka.

The consignment consists of over 900 metric tons of assorted food items (including rice dhal and sugar), personal hygiene products, clothing articles (including sarees, dhotis, lungis, towels and bed sheets) and cooking utensils (including steel cooking pots, plates, tumblers and spoons). The food items will cover the needs of 40,000 families for approximately two weeks.

This assistance is a reflection of India’s continuing concern for the welfare of the conflict-affected IDPs, many of whom have managed to come out of the conflict-affected zone only within the last ten days. We thank the Government of Sri Lanka for facilitating this consignment and the ICRC for agreeing to distribute it.
