Advisory on fraudulent telephone calls

It has come to the High Commission’s notice that some fraudsters are spoofing High Commission of India telephone lines to make calls aimed at cheating people. These calls are apparently shown as being made from the Indian High Commission landline numbers.  These fraudsters try to extort money from Indian nationals by inter alia claiming that there are errors in their passports, visa forms, immigration forms etc. which could be rectified by paying money, and at the same time warning that the so called errors, if not rectified, could result in deportation of the individual to India.

The High Commission of India would like to clearly state that it does not make any such calls.  Anyone receiving such calls are requested to kindly notify the High Commission by email (cons.colombo@mea.gov.in) with full details. They are also advised not to reveal any personal information or transfer any money in response to such calls. The High Commission is separately taking up the matter with relevant authorities.
